U3A

U3A stands for the University of the Third Age which is a self-help organisation for people who are retired, semi-retired or no longer in full time employment providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment.

Its main purpose is to encourage lifelong learning for those no longer in full time employment in an informal and fun way. Since we learn for the pleasure of it, no qualifications are required and none are given. We meet every 2nd Tuesday from October to May at the Grant Arms Hotel. Contact Joan Steele, telephone number 01479 870154 for local information

U3As are charities in their own right and are run entirely by volunteers. Local U3As are learning cooperatives who draw upon the knowledge, experience and skills of their own members to organise and provide interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the membership.

Between them U3As offer the chance to study over 300 different subjects in such fields as art, languages, music, history, life sciences, philosophy, computing, crafts, photography and walking. A typical U3A has about 250 members but could be as small as 12 and as large at 2000.There are over 600 U3A’s in the UK with a membership of well over 170,000.The University of the Third Age is a worldwide organisation having started in France 25 years ago.
