Heavy Snowfall in Grantown on Spey
Once again, day after day now, for almost 14 days - more snow.
The place looks great for visitors, but if you live here and need to go out occasionally, it’s getting to be a bit of a bind.
Hogmanay Party At Grantown Has Been Cancelled
Our Hogmanay and a Half Event in the Square at Grantown on Spey has been cancelled for 2009.
The weather has been dreadful for the last 2 weeks, we have had over 2 feet of snow and overnight temperatures at around -16 degrees for the last week. Most days the high temperature has been about -8 degrees.
Overnight on the 30th December, and into the morning of Thursday we have had another 10″ of snow. At this time it is still falling, and the weather people have more snow falling over into New Years Day and beyond.
The bulk of snow has made the Square unsafe for the event, and it is with regret that it has had to be cancelled.
However, every cloud has a silver lining, well white lining in this case, the snow is absolutely perfect for skiing, sledging or just standing in awe!
Local roads are mostly passable, but please take care if you are coming to our area.
Happy New Year anyway - and maybe we will see you again in 2010.
Christmas Day in Grantown on Spey 2009
If a white christmas is what you are looking for - well look no further. Ignore the news weather broadcasts about a ’springling’ of snow in Nottingham.
Here at Grantown on Spey it snowed for hours on a cold and crisp Christmas Eve. Christmas day has brought us ANOTHER 6″ of fresh snow. This morning it’s a balmy 0 degrees and blue skies.
Grantown Christmas Torchlight Parade
Video just released!!
On a freezing, and I mean cold, pre Christmas Eve night December 2009, hundreds of people followed the pipe band and Santa on his sleigh, through the snow covered streets of Grantown on Spey.
What a great holiday spectacle.
Christmas carols followed in the Square, mince pies, mulled wine - and seasonal fun.
23rd December 2009
The Square at Grantown on Spey, is the venue for this evenings Torchlight Parade. Reindeer and Santa Claus will be in attendance, just before they go off on their world cruise on Christmas Eve.
The photo is of the Clock Tower in the Sguare at Grantown on Spey.
The nice people at the Cairngorms National Park office in Grantown have been good enough to arrange a white christmas for us - thank you very much CNPA.
This could be the last chance to get that present list, that you have checked twice, into the clammy mit of Santa!!
Many shops on the High Street will be open for last minute shopping, and the christmas lights at Grantown on Spey have never looked better.
This morning we awoke to another pile of snow - and that means more shovelling, but the town looks really great. Roads are open, and it will be a spectacular evening.
Make sure you are here early, parade starts at 7pm, and that you are ready for the community carol singing. (Bring a camcorder, and send us your video,. We will add it to our You Tube listing, or send us the link to your own, and we will paste it into our site)
Look forward to seeing you all this evening.
Weather forecast for today is sunny, 24 degrees centigrade, with a light south east breeze which will be just enough to fan the perspiration form your brow, and blow the snow off the palm trees!!
Happy Christmas everyone.
Christmas and Hogmanay in the Cairngorms at Grantown on Spey
Wow - the snow has arrived early this year!
This photo was taken on the 21st December 2009 just upstream of the new bridge over the River Spey in Grantown on Spey, firmly emdedded in the Cairngorms National Park.
Today it has never risen above -8, which is pretty chilly by anyone’s standards.
The snow is set to stay over Christmas, and by the looks of things into the New year too.
We have a Christmas torchlight parade in Grantown, starting at 7pm on the 23rd December. As usual it will be a great spectacle, and with the snow, the real reindeer and our very own Santa Claus, will be in their element. The parade makes it’s way to the square, where will be carols, mulled wine and mince pies.
This event gets bigger and better every year - the kids love it, even if some of the carol singing is a bit of a tester. Great fun, and tradition, for all ages.
The skiing at Cairngorm Mountain, near Aviemore and the Lecht ski area is marvellous. Loads of packed powder snow, looks like it’s to be a great winter for skiing.
If you are looking to stay overnight, take a look at www.visitgrantown.co.uk for last minute deals. The accommodation usually books up very quickly over the festive period, and when the snow arrives EVERYONE wants to be here. However, there are still places available - so take a look, and have a proper White Christmas for a change.
